Solutions on either side of a membrane, in this case the cell's, want to be equal. Inside our cells we have, say 5 particles of Na and Cl (salt); outside is seawater which has 20 Na and 20 Cl's. We want to make them equal...so pive diffusion across the membrane dictates that water from inside the cell will enter the sea water solution trying to dilute the salt down. This will keep happening until the cell is completely empty of water (and dies). (Or dehydrates.)
