Well, the earliest hominid fossils have been found in areas of Africa that are predominantly savanna. As a species, we evolved there and spread out. But the thing about natural selection is, anywhere a species can survive, it belongs. Sure we need to employ adaptations to survive in colder or drier climates, but other creatures do as well -- we just happen to make coats out of fur instead of being forced to evolve further.
